PC GuideROG Ally X owners report chipping problem that doesn’t affect the original model as much

Users of handheld devices like the Steam Deck or ASUS ROG Ally are usually fairly careful to properly look after their devices. Not surprisingly, then, some owners of the Ally X are alarmed at reports of chipping plastic on these devices. The ASUS ROG Ally X is the successor to the original Ally and features several improvements to the specs to make it more powerful, as well as a new matte black plastic shell in contrast to the sleek white of the original model. Some users have noticed an issue with that black plastic, however. Users of the ROG Ally X have been posting on Reddit about the plastic on the device chipping away at the sides, causing ugly gouges in the plastic on the corners, where the case has broken and fallen apart.

Others in the thread who also use the Ally X confirm they have experienced similar cracking problems. Those who own the original white version of the Ally seemingly aren’t experiencing it on the same scale, though there are still some reports. Either way, this problem appears to be more prevalent on the Ally X.

Cause unknown

The cause is unknown, though some users speculate that it may be a manufacturing defect, since the original poster, u/OswinRose, specified that the unit has never been dropped, and is kept in a case when not in use. As is sensible for a device that costs almost $800. Some have suggested that perhaps some hand lotions are reacting to the plastic, or perhaps even the natural oils and sweat from users’ hands, which is causing the plastic to degrade. If so, this is a serious design oversight from ASUS ROG. Unfortunately, users with this problem have a choice of putting up with it, finding a third-party cover or replacement shell, or attempting an RMA. None of these options is ideal, but until ASUS ROG responds officially, this is the only way forward.
