Clear sponsorship labels help audiences interpret creator recommendations

An enthusiastic product recommendation can look similar whether it comes from an ordinary customer or someone working with a brand. A clear explanation of that relationship gives audiences information they need to assess the message.

The US Federal Trade Commission's guidance describes material connections that may affect the weight people give an endorsement. Payment is one example, but other relationships or benefits can also be relevant. The central communication issue is whether the connection is clear where the recommendation appears.

Placement and wording matter. A label buried among unrelated text may be easy to miss, particularly when content is viewed quickly on a small screen. A disclosure should not require an audience to infer a commercial relationship from ambiguous shorthand. Requirements can differ between jurisdictions and formats.

For media organisations and creators, transparency should be considered during planning, not added after a campaign is distributed. A consistent approach helps distinguish commercial work from independent judgement. It also makes the relationship easier to understand when a post is clipped, shared or viewed outside the creator's main page, where much of the original context may be missing.
